this family was using their custom weekend home in the woods for several years before they realized it could function much better for their needs. originally designed out-of-tune with its location and its users, circulation and a noisy loft wasn't working for this active family. kate and i first worked to correct the circulation inside and out and add flexibility to the ever-changing outdoor spaces. we un-lofted the house and brought it back in-tune with nature by supplementing it with a more natural palette of colors, materials, and textures. additionally, we added custom woodwork and located a mini-artist's studio in an upper level perch with a great vantage outward towards the property's massive redwood trees. as the final touch, we swapped out furnishings and rugs in order to uplift the style into a more sensual but cheery experience.
